Day 10 Friday

Leonard continues to do well, surprising the doctors. He is almost breathing on his own and can hardly wait to cut loose and start talking. I know he's getting better because he is getting rather demanding. He wants to eat and drink and not happy with our answer of "no, not yet". His fever came down today from 103 - 104 of the past 2 days to 100. The nurses are keeping cool damp towels on him. He has developed a nasty rash all over his body and they are not sure why. Could be the high fevers. Might try Benadryl to relieve the itching. It's driving him crazy. They were unable to take the drainage tubes out of his hip incision today as it's still draining too much. He will be so happy to have all these various tubes removed.

The itching and rashes that I experienced during long hospital stays I learned to attribute to a couple of different things. For one thing all hospital mattresses are coated with a plastic material for sterilization purposes but they do not allow perspiration to evaporate which can cause a lot of burning, itching, and rashes. I was able to alleviate some of this with the use of a lot of talcum powder. Another thing that caused a lot of itching and rashes on me and my extremely sensitive skin was any kind of tape that they used to secure any bandages or IV sites. Amy Lee
