I spoke too soon. He was doing so well yesterday afternoon but he had an awful night and this morning he was still having the diarhea. None of the cultures or blood work is showing any infections whatsoever. The doctors are baffled to say the least and we are just frustrated. He just wants to feel good so he can do his rehab and come home. This is putting him behind schedule and he doesn't like it. Everyday we think it will be the day that he's back to some normalacy and can be released, but it's not happening. Patience isn't one of Leonard's strongest virtues.
He did get the staples out of the hip and it feels good. His trauma doc came by this morning and just listened to his lungs to make sure all was well and he was pleased. The hole where the trach was, is making lots of funny noises which is normal. It will take a couple of days to close. It's amazing how that closes up all by itself. It's like a large body piercing!
We are ready to advance to the next chapter so let's hope it happens sooner rather than later. Keep those prayers going as we have a long road ahead of us.

Lorrie, It is so awful for me to think about what Leonard is going through...I can so relate to it all. Your most recent updates brought another unpleasant memory back. The Dr. in California reopened my incision about 5 days after my surgery (to stop it from seeping a little blood) and after that I came up with a positive test for staph (spelling?) infection and they put me on an antibiotic for it that was so strong that it gave me horrible diahria. It did not occur to me until I read your account of his low grade fever and that he was still receiving antibiotics. Even though all subsequent tests were negative for infection all the Dr.s that reviewed my case insisted on me continuing a full 10day course of an IV antibiotic (the name of which is maybe Vancomyacin?) because my immune system is compromised due to the fact that my spleen had to be removed many years ago. When they finally did let me go home it was with another 10 day course of another oral antibiotic which had the same effect on me. The Dr.s all told me that I could take something to counteract it but I was afraid to because of my tendency toward the opposite. When all this was going on I recalled having been asked by previous Dr.s when I had been on antibiotics in the past had asked if I had diahria as a result of them. I think that diahria is a possible side effect that is listed on almost every antibiotic that I've read about. I'm glad to hear that he is feeling a little better again & I hope that the intestinal problems are behind you already but I am a little surprised that the Dr.s have not mentioned that the antibiotics might be causing part of this problem. Did the Ortho Dr. say anything about his inability to feel the bottom of that foot? My best wishes and prayers are with you as always. Love, Amy
