Day 16 Thursday

Our prayers have been answered. His ankle and leg surgery was very successful. It was supposed to take approximately 4 hours and it took 7 but the surgeon was extremely confident that he would do well in his recovery. He did say there is a bone in the ankle that he may have to remove 6 months down the road but for now he left it alone. He also stated that eventually as years go by arthritis will set in but 2 weeks ago he wasn't even sure if he could save it because of the swelling and the extent of the breaks, but he did. After surgery I thought he would be heavily sedated but he was wide eyed and wanting to know what happened. I could not have asked for a better Valentine's Day gift. The surgeries are behind us now and we can start the mending. I spoke with his trauma doctor this afternoon and he said that he will remain in ICU for a couple of days then to a regular room and should be released some time next week. He will have to go to a nursing home for 3 months as he will not be able to walk. I have not told him this piece of news yet. Hopefully, I will be able to find a facility close to home. All his nurses have been such caring individuals and have been wonderful with his care. They said he is one of the best patients they have had for awhile as he is so laid back, smiles a lot and never ever complains even though he has every right to complain with all his injuries. He's a good boy!

Hi Lorrie,
It is sure good to hear that our friend Leonard is doing so much better. I sit here and remember not too many years ago when we went through our trauma with Em. Please know that each day gets easier, and soon your dear one will be back home. Let me know if there is anything we can do.
